Private Training

General Information

Training with Dina offers REAL solutions to behavior problems and an improvement in your relationship with your dog, in addition to learning traditional obedience commands and household manners. Dina is a NADOI member in good standing (#1084C) and a NADOI Certified Obedience Instructor. Fees include travel cost (El Paso), individualized homework plans, and email/phone support. Private lesson appointments are normally available weekday mornings or afternoons. Evenings and weekends are generally reserved for group and competition classes. Please call or email for available appointment times. Depending on the kind of training you need and/or problems you wish to solve, you may need to purchase/obtain supplies such as leash, collar, soft treats, crate, dog bed, and other training products that may be helpful in training and managing your dog. You will be advised of the list of supplies during the appointment booking, and often additional supplies are recommended during the initial session.  You MUST be present for the appointment and you MUST practice all assigned homework in between appointments in order for your dog to be successful.  Dina is not going to train your dog; Dina is going to train YOU to train your dog.

In home appointments are only available within my travel area. Must be west of Joe Battle (375) on the east side or east of Transmountain (375) on the west side (except for the new neighborhood immediately west of transmountain road) and no further than Sean Haggerty in the northeast.  If you are outside the travel area please register for lessons at the park.

Aggression Cases

A minimum commitment of six (6) in home private sessions for $600.00 is required for aggressive dogs. This includes the initial consultation and evaluation as well as 5 follow up sessions. “Aggressive” means any dog over 9 months of age who has purposefully bitten a person and caused injury, or who showed intent to bite a person but was unsuccessful only because of owner intervention (i.e. owner pulled dog away in time). Aggression towards other dogs causing injury resulting in a vet visit may also fall in to the “aggression” category, depending on the details of the incident(s). Training at other locations (such as the park) is only offered on a case by case basis, and management tools may be required to ensure the safety of the trainer, the owner, the dog, and the public. Owner must understand and agree that their goals will be limited by the dog’s temperament and personality, and that while behaviors can be modified, aggression will always have to be managed for the dog’s lifetime. Each situation involving aggression is different. If you have an aggressive dog you would like help with, please call or email first to discuss your dog and your individual needs. An evaluation will be required to determine if your dog is a good candidate for a training program.

FAQs

  • When is private training offered?

Only Monday through Friday between 9 AM and 4 PM, by appointment. No evenings or weekends. If you work during the day and cannot take time off to meet for private training, then your best option is a group class.

  • Where are private lessons held?

Private lessons could be in your home (anywhere within El Paso), at my neighborhood park, or at another location such as Lowe’s or Cabela’s depending on the dogs level of training and what we want to practice. The pricing is different depending on location, see the private training section for details.

  • What is the difference between private training and group training?

Group classes are generally less expensive, and are held at a particular time every week on the same day so that you must be able to show up for six weeks in a row on that same day and time. There is a standard criteria that needs to be met during each class. You must be committed to doing your homework every day in order to keep up with the rest of the class and to be ready to do the new homework that will be handed out each week. Group classes are held in a public park so there are lots of distractions, including the other dogs and their handlers.

Private training is just you, me & your dog so you have my full attention for the entire session. Since we don’t have to stick to a specific criteria we can be a little bit more flexible in what is covered each week, and we can spend more time discussing behavioral issues if need be. When private training is held in your home there are no outside distractions, or sometimes when distractions are needed training can be held at the park.

  • How do I pay?

Pay with PayPal, cash, or check, Apple Pay, Venmo, or Zelle

  • Does my dog have to have shots for this training?

Dogs must be current on vaccinations and you must provide proof.

  • Does my dog have to live in my house?

Yes. If your dog lives primarily outside, you must commit to keeping your dog inside the house to be accepted for private training sessions.

  • What equipment do I need for this training?

Regular buckle or snap collar, slip collar, or prong training collar and regular 6 foot leash. If you are unsure what kind of collar you need for your dog please call Dina prior to class start date for advice. Biothane or leather leash is recommended over webbing or rope. No harnesses head collars, or E-collars!

While a Flexi (retractable) leash is a good piece of equipment to have for potty training, it is not going to be useful in a group class setting. You will need a 20 foot training line towards the end of class (weeks 5 & 6) to practice stays and recalls.

Bring a dog bed for the place exercise. Platform bed recommended (K & H brand or Kuranda bed).

Soft treats! String cheese or chicken breast are highly recommended as well as hotdogs.  Commercial treats are OK, but less preferable.

Recommendations for additional supplies may be made depending on the reason for training.
